Know any Dale Sr. fans?
Dustin Long wants to hear from you for a story he's working on.
His pitch:
"I'm looking for passionate Dale Earnhardt fans. February marks the fifth anniversary of his death at Daytona. I'd like to find out what life is like five years later for these people. Have they forsaken the sport since? Do they still buy his stuff? Do they treat him as if he's still alive? Please send me a note on anybody that comes to mind or how I can contact them. Or pass along my note to them and they can contact me at dustin_long@news-record.com."
In case you're wondering, Dustin's working on a story for early 2006 pegged to the fifth anniversary of Dale Sr.'s death at Daytona. Maybe I've been blessed, but Feb. 18, 2001 still ranks up there as one of the saddest days of my life.
Come to think about it, 2001 was a pretty crummy year all around.

Thank you so much for posting that news John. I am sure you are aware just how much I loved Dale Sr. And if Dustin isn't aware how much I love the Earnhardts, I'm sure he will after the e-mail I sent to him.
2001 changed my life forever.

My father's attendance at Daytona dates back to racing on the beach. He also was at the 1st 500 with the photo finish.
I probably have been to over 100 races with him in my life, but he stopped going that day almost 5 years ago. It happended just to the left of us since our seats were right were the cars enter pit road.
What I remember most via reporting that day was that as I was listening to the MRN broadcast via my scanner during a commercial break, Eli Gold said he was done reporting that day. I believe he was up in the Union 76 tower in the same location. I think everyone reacted to Ken Schaeder's reaction when he went over to the car and turned away.

On February 18, 2001 was a sad day for me.I was watching the race on TV, when Dale SR.was unvolved in the fatal wreck. I have seen him be in more terrible wrecks than this one was and get out of his car and walk to the ambulance. I never did meet Dale in person, but after that day I felt like I had lost a close friend. The #3 will live forever. Donald
