See Jeff Gordon for $99
At the risk of sounding like a shill for the speedway up the street, so to speak, Jeff Gordon will be the featured driver in the Fan Zone before the April 2 race at Martinsville Speedway.
Getting to talk to the four-time champ will set you back 99 bucks, or about the amount of money Gordon makes in the time it takes him to put on his helmet before a race. More details here.
If anyone here goes, maybe you should ask him what he's going to do with himself if he misses the chase for a second straight year. Seriously -- it could happen.

Is this practice unique to Martinsville, unique to ISC owned tracks (I think Martinsville is ISC owned), or also observed by Speedway Motorsports tracks?
Since I'm not into this kind of schmoozing I'm not quire sure what to think. Back when I was a kid Cale Yarbrough and Bobby Allison would say hello to you for free.
Well that's another thing, if the proceeds of this cash grab fest were to benefit driving pioneers such as Bobby Allison, who are penniless today then I might view it in a different light. Unfortunately I think this cash will be trucked down to Hwy 92 in Daytona Beach.

Yes, Martinsville is an ISC track. I have no idea if the Fan Zone is an ISC invention.
It's a sign of the times, Mark.

I think you're paying $99 to share the same lunchroom with Jeff Gordon, not actually speak with him.

No thanks, I'll keep my $99. That's pretty rude that you have to pay to be in the same room with him and there is a sure bet he won't even acknowledge you. I think we pay enough for our seats, food and gas that drivers should be a little more giving than taking. But that's just my opinion.
