Toyota to Cup in 2007

So says the New York Times, which uses the most tortured anonymous source description ever.

Oh, and NASCAR might be switching to unleaded fuel in 2008. (link)

The way this day is going, I wouldn't be too surprised to hear Brian France announce that in 2010 NASCAR drivers will have to race backward on square tracks.

Monday update: Dustin Long's story from Saturday is here. Bill Davis Racing, who's running Toyotas in the Truck Series, will do the same in Cup. Michael Waltrip Racing also will run Toyota in Cup. More details will come out from NASCAR today and Toyota on Tuesday.

You're close Jon, very close. In 2010, I have it on "good authority" (is that how you MSM types do it?) NASCAR will become WWASCAR.

So the COT is a quote-unquote generic race car. And that's different from what NASCAR is running today now? I mean, come on. Take away the grill and the name plate up front and I dare anyone to tell the difference between the three current models, especially at 180 mph.

The NY Times piece, btw, is truly an example of craptacular journalism. "According to a person with knowledge of the announcement who was granted anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it." I'd be embarrassed to even mention that to my bosses, much less argue that this combination of words should ever be seen in print.

John, thanks for the opening to use my first modified post of the year. Back in the 70's I used to go to a dirt track still in existence today, East Windsor Speedway.

In order to increase fan interest not only would they have a 50 lap feature where cars went around the track counter-clockwise, then there would be a 20 lap race where the same cars went around the track clockwise. I still remember the name of the guy who won like 3 of these races in a row --- Les Wrongway Katona.

And NASCAR has already raced the trucks on square track, back in the early years of the trucks they raced at Flemington, NJ, which was a square (honest it was referred to as the square oval) and it is where asphalt modifieds raced in the 90's and dirt modifieds for many years before that.

Mark, I think I could write a post about my lunch (two slices, up the street at the sorta new Italian place whose name I can't remember) and that would give you enough of an opening to write about modifieds. ;)

Seriously ... thanks for the history lesson. Maybe NASCAR's All-Star race could have a Kulwicki Memorial portion.

P.S. Is this the Les Katona you mentioned?

P.P.S. Mark, the East Windsor Speedway seems to still exist, but it's not long for this world. More details here.

Make sure to back up the URL ... the site seems to have a lot of modified news and info from the Jersey area.

According to a person with knowledge of the announcement who was granted anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it...
"Toyota will join the American brands Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge in the top two levels of competition. They will run a small mini- hybrid car, (therefore taking care of the lead issue)that sounds like a Kawasaki stand up jetski, owned by Boogity,Boogity,BOOGITY!INC., with Driver Mikey and Big Brother Crew Chief / Spotter D.W. heading the team with the gusto and ultra promotion that only a Waltrip could do.
Go left...left...and clear...clear...will really mean:
A car is going to rip your left leg off Mikey! Pull it clear inside the window. Whew!
Beep! Beep!"

John, I see you discovered the "3-widepicture vault site".

If you click on the 60's & 70's portions you'll find my childhoold favorites, Jim Hoffman, Gil Hearne, Don Stives, and Bob Russell.

Come on I'm not that bad; granted you can put any 4 or 5 words out there and I can go off on a tirade about the Guilford County School Board.
