We found us a sucker
When I mentioned esterday that there was a spot still open for Saturday's Busch race, I figured someone would try and grab it.
Someone did: Guy named Randy McDonald, who turned a best lap of 173.519 mph in the No. 28 Chevrolet.
That would be smokin' fast at, oh, I dunno, Martinsville or Darlington or even Sonoma. But at Talladega ("We Put the Super and Speed in Superspeedway"), that's terrible. McDonald was 5 mph slower than Justin Ashburn, whose best-ever Busch finish in 23 races was 14th (believe it or not) a year ago at Dega. And McDonald was 11 mph slower than pole-grabber JJ Yeley.
How slow is that? If the two drivers can maintain their speeds ... hmmm ... (taps on calculator) ... I think Yeley just lapped him.
McDonald's stats are here - he's no threat to win, obviously, but he has some experience (but little success) in NASCAR - just 3 top 10s in 123 starts, mostly in the Truck Series.
But get this: two of those top 10s (one Trucks, one Busch) were at ... Daytona. So maybe he was just getting warmed up. Guy hasn't raced since last year, and his ride probably needs a lap or two to blow the dust off of it.
I have to give McDonald major props for hauling his rear end, er, his car, down there and getting himself in the race. Beats the heck out of what you'll be doing Saturday, eh?
