The Spotter, the newest daytime drama
Travis Kvapil now sits 38th in points. Instead of, oh, I don't know, practicing, he takes a couple of days this week at Hickory doing some on-location filming for "The Guiding Light," the soap opera that's been on the air since way before I was born. Kvapil's hometown paper in Wisconsin has the whole story.
From the AP version:
The story line revolves around Zimmer's character, Reva Shayne Lewis, and her battle with breast cancer. Thanks to encouragement from her doctor, Colin McCabe, played by Paul Fitzgerald, and Kvapil, Lewis gets the chance to take the wheel of the No. 32 Chevrolet in an attempt to prove her diagnosis will not stop her from living out her dreams.
A few minutes after I saw the story on the wire, I got the show's actual script via e-mail. Just call it "Spotter Theater." Check it out after the jump:
1. EXT. RACETRACK
LEWIS, in her orange Tide firesuit, holds her racing helmet. She stands next to the No. 32 Chevrolet. She looks nervous, but excited. With her are KVAPIL and MCCABE and car owner WELLS. WELLS is holding a stop watch.
WELLS: Well, come on, little lady, hop on in there and see what you can do.KVAPIL: Yeah, don't scratch the paint. I have to drive this thing Sunday at Pocono. [KVAPIL, MCCABE AND WELLS chuckle.]
MCCABE: Make sure to go slow, now, Reva. I don't want you to hurt yourself. You have to be strong for the chemo.
2. INT RACE CAR
LEWIS climbs into the car, puts on the helmet, attaches the steering wheel and flips the switch. KVAPIL sticks his head in the car and says something that can't be heard over the roar of the motor. KVAPIL gives LEWIS a thumbs-up and wink.
3. EXT TRACK
The camera follows LEWIS as she drives the orange No. 32 Tide Chevrolet around the track. The camera stops on KVAPIL, WELLS and MCCABE. They all look at the stopwatch.
MCCABE: That can't be right, can it?WELLS: The stopwatch don't lie. 15.5. What was the pole last weekend, here, low 15s?
KVAPIL: [almost whispering]: I've never turned better than a 16 here.
WELLS: Travis! What's your best time here?
KVAPIL: Well, boss, it was, ah, 15-something. That was a while ago. I'm sure I could do better.
WELLS: I'm sure you could, son. [Turns to MCCABE] Say, doc. You know if Reva's got plans for Sunday? I'm taking my car to a big race Sunday in Pennsylvania, and I'd be honored if she drove it.
4. INT CAR
The in-car camera shows LEWIS crossing the finish line. A man in the flag stand waves the checkered flag. The engine noise decreases as LEWIS heads back to the pits. The radio crackles to life.
MCCABE: You did it, Reva! Mr. Wells is going to let you drive his car on Sunday?LEWIS: What about Travis? Isn't he supposed to drive Sunday?
MCCABE: Don't worry about him. Bring that car back here and let's celebrate!
The camera catches a glimpse of KVAPIL walking out of view, his shoulders slouched, his hands in the pockets of his fire suit. LEWIS talks to herself.
LEWIS: Poor Travis. He should have spent less time acting and more time driving.
