Tony Stewart, wine snob

We had the office teevee tuned to ESPNews ("the siete," I think it's called), which showed a portion of an on-camera interview with Tony Stewart.

The interviewer (off camera) asked something about Sonoma. Stewart's reply was something along the lines of how he's not much of a wine drinker, but he likes to take his girlfriends on the winery tours because they get drunk pretty quickly and don't ask too many questions later.

My kingdom for the exact quote. Anyone?

This isn't the first time that wine and driving haven't mixed well. At least Cast Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church could blame their troubles on the script.

Monday update: Watch the video here from the CBS affiliate in SF. Thanks to Kristi in comments for the link.

Tony is one of my favorite drivers...because he can drive the wheels off anything. But, off the track, he doesn't always choose his words too wisely. His comment about the winery is something you say to the guys while hanging out...not recommended for national television.

If ESPN or any other news outlet had bothered to air the remaining part of the interview, it would have been blatantly obvious that it was a JOKE. Even the interviewer was laughing uncontrollaby. Here's the link...you be the judge.

Thanks for the link, Kristi. (The money quote is at the end of the interview. Monday update: Watch the video here.)

Just because Joe Blow Dry is laughing doesn't mean it's funny. It wasn't, even in the context of the full interview.

Btw, the correct answer to "What should I have said?" is usually this: Nothing.

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Now about this kingdom...

John Newsom said:

I'm sorry to be such a scold, Kristi - I think Tony's probably the best wheelman in racin' right now - but Tony should have passed on that last question.

As for my kingdom .... I'll let you borrow the online bully pulpit for an afternoon. How's that?

Kristi said:

Hmmm, bully pulpit for an afternoon. How could I possibly refuse?

Um, he says at the end that the girlfriends don't ask for too much later. That's quite a bit different than them not asking questions later.

Yes, he can drive...and sometimes act like a mad man. I do love his unpredictability.
He knows that something, somewhere will be said about any comment he makes. Sometimes I think he says things like that on purpose, just to rile people up, or redirect them. He is really sick of the focus on his shoulder. He may very well be manipulating the press for his own entertainment. He's a smart cookie.(He cooks too? What a man!!:) Take all of the above and that is why he is my driver.
John, I don't believe the original offer was the bully pit. It was the whole kingdom.
