"Just a pathetic imitator"

That was a portion of the headline we ran in today's paper over Ed Hardin's column over the whole Tony Stewart episode.

Here's how Ed, who covered NASCAR back in the day, starts out:

Tony Stewart might be the best driver on the Nextel Cup tour, as some people say, and he might be the biggest star in the stock-car series, as some people insist, but he's also the most dangerous, as some people find out the hard way.

He's in the news again, not for winning a race or a championship and not for climbing a fence and jumping into the stands. He's in the news again because he's the biggest jerk in racing.

And that's from his fellow competitors.

Strong stuff that gets stronger. Go read the rest.

More dangerous than Jimmie Johnson at Talladega?

Much more dangerous than Jimmie's one major foulup.

Tony is a loose cannon who will be dealt with on the track unless NASCAR plucks his feathers.

Tony, in my mind is the guy who has the big MO to win this year's championship but as a result of his childishness not only is threatening the well being of his colleagues and himself, but his championship prospects as well.

Matt said:

You mean foulups.

As Hardin refuses to believe, he is the best driver in NASCAR and at this point is still a threat to win the championship. What has been overlooked is that he was involved in two incidents and still rebounded to a 7th place finish last week. He may be dealt with but he also may overcome the setbacks to win. When the Chase starts he'll only 45 points away from the lead.

John Newsom said:

Hardin can speak for himself, Matt, but his issue with Stewart isn't talent. It's his bad attitude.

To bump a guy to get his attention is one thing. To knock him hard enough to send him flying across the track and take out someone else - that's uncalled for.

Stewart's setbacks were his own devising. No one told him to take out two other drivers. But, yeah, he drove the wheels off the 20. Everyone else planning to be in the chase ought to be really worried.
