Everyone wants to race Sunday

Holy cow: 50 drivers entered for Watkins Glen.

You've got some usual ringers (Said, Fellows, Simo), some wannabes/soon-to-bes (Ash, Menard), a past champ who can't use the past champions provisional after all (Elliott) and a few random guys (like David Murry and Johnny Miller).

Sports car star Max Papis will race Cup, or at least try to. And speaking of try to, Cup regulars Scott Wimmer and Michael Waltrip are outside the top 35, which means they'll need to qualify on time.

The big story from yesterday, of course, is who won't be racing Sunday.

Here's the entry list. See what other story lines develop -- other than the obvious one, that is.

P.S. If I'm Greg "I've never finished better than 30th at the Glen" Biffle, I'm really nervous about now.

Watkins Glen is a great old track, and there should be more road courses like it. I'm just afraid there will be a lawsuit at some point to take the AMD away and give it to some other newer track. That seems to be what's happening with the Kentucky Speedway, and I'm surprised more people aren't alarmed about it.

In my perfect world, Pocono would give up its date to a Richmond-esque track on Staten Island, and the Watkins Glen date would go to VIR, mostly because VIR is closer than the Glen.

Back on topic: There seems to be a back story to the Web site you linked to above: this (warning: PDF) and all of these suggest that there's bad blood between UNITE and Cintas. Kentucky Speedway seems to be collateral damage.

Thanks for looking, John. That may be, but it doesn't change the fact for me that lawsuits are just a terrible way to reorganize the sport. KY is a nice track, but it's brand new and nobody promised them Nextel. (But if they want to take away a race from somebody, I nominate California.)

If you do care about it, and not to get too activisty about it, there's a petition to be signed , which is also Unite.
