Post Indy

Here's what I get for missing all but the last 20 laps of Sunday's race:

* I thought Junior finished sixth because he had a good car all day

* I thought Kasey Kahne picked an odd time to practice his right-hand turns. Watkins Glen isn't until next weekend.

* I thought NASCAR had done away with its green-white-checker rule. Either that, or I don't understand it.

After reading Dustin Long's story in today's paper (notes are here), I'd have to say in hindsight I missed an interesting race.

So what did y'all think? Anything really stand out? And did anyone see the Ricky Bobby movie? I know some of you (lots of you, actually)did.

Matt said Talladega Nights was disappointing, so I'll wait until it comes out at the discount theatre.

Kudos to Junior and his cousin for making a smart strategic move. I'm ticked at JGordon, who had a much better car than Junior, that he and his CC didn't roll the dice and stay out at the next to last caution. He'd probably had a top 5 finish.

I don't know what race DL was watching, but the race I saw was BORING. This league needs some more short tracks and road courses that depend more on a driver's ability than horsepower. I say drop one of the Pocono races, one of the medium tracks, and one of the Northeast races, and add more road courses.

It's a first! I agree with Jon. It was a boring race (and I wouldn't mind seeing another road course on the schedule).

Jimmie Johnson's story is pretty cool -- overcoming a blown tire early to win at the track where he's been snakebitten. And Jeff Gordon making up those lost laps was interesting.

But watching it all unfold was just kind of boring.

J. Johnson - 4 wins and leads the standings.

K. Kahne - 4 wins and drops to 11th in the standings.

Somebody remind me again why more points should be awarded for winning a race.

Race - boring!

Movie - based on what I heard, I'm waiting for it to come out on DVD, and then I'm going to rent it.

Jimmy and Jeffy - good work using those yellow flags to their advantage, if it weren't for those I believe Jimmy wouldn't have won.

Earnhardt Jr. - shouldn't be in a position where they have to gamble by staying out. Whith the resources available to them they should never have been in that position in the first place.

Marc - I agree there should be more points awarded for wins, and other such accomplishments (i.e. poles), because the way it is now is only creating drivers who stroke instead of race. Obviously Jimmy strokes better than Casey, but give him time I'm sure he'll get better.

I agree, they should award more points to those who win the races. I couldn't believe it when Matt K won only one race and still won the championship a few years back.

And look at Mark Martin who putters around the course in a car that probably half the drivers out there would win in, has won only 3 races in six years, but does just enough on his Sunday afternoon jaunts to make it into the finals.

Kasey's raced his heart out, brings excitement to the tracks and as spectators we're rewarded with his display of determination, top of the list in wins, and at this point out of contention for the final sprint. Something's missing in this picture.

One of the trial balloons NASCAR floated last week (read about it here) would give a wild card to the driver outside the top 10 with the most wins.

The plus side of that scenario: If the chase started tomorrow, Kahne (4 wins) would be in.

The flip side: If Kahne cracks the top 10, Greg Biffle and Kurt Busch (each with one win) are next on the list. Do you think the world is ready for a chase with TWO Busch brothers in it?

Jon said:

Two Busches in the NASCAR finals, and one in the White House, didn't consider that possible scenario. Now that's too many Bus(c)hs.

On second thought, let's leave things the way they are.

Jon that may have been the stupidest thing I've read this month. Mark's hardly "putting around" the track. Earlier this season his pit crew cost him multiple top 5 finishes. Now the pit crew has gotten better and he just went through a slump. We'll see in the Chase if the cars are there for him. Everyone seems to have forgotten that the Fusion is a brand-new car this year.
