The newest NASCAR blogger
Why, yes, it's News & Record NASCAR writer Dustin Long.
Props to our sister paper, the Virginian-Pilot, which is hosting Dustin's blog. At this point we haven't figured out (mostly because we haven't tried) how to get Dustin's posts to show up here automatically. That's something we're going to do in the NASCAR offseason, aka the week between Christmas and New Year's. No, I don't know what that will mean for The Spotter.
Anyhoo ... Dustin's first post is about the GM driver test today at Caraway Speedway. Some interesting names on there. For instance, I had no idea that Dale Earnhardt Sr. had a grandson. I sure hope the kid got his driving genes from granddad and not his father.
P.S. If you want to comment on Dustin's blog, you have to register, and then your comments still have to go through the 10 committees they've set up to review things like that. See how good you've got it here at the Spotter?

Jeffrey just doesn't sound like an Earnhardt name. He's going to need a nickname quick or he doesn't have a chance. I propose 'Skipper' in the hope that the driving gene only skipped one generation.

Are you implying you might be without a job?
A curse on upper management.
A motivated lower echelon employee plows new ground in the NASCAR blogosphere, garners a loyal following numbering in the thousands and then sees his work credited to senior mgmt.
Corporate life can be cruel.

No, Jon, I'll still be here in the N&R sense of the word here.
As for whether I'll be here in this particular corner of cyberspace, I dunno yet. I spent all morning dealing with why things were (and weren't) in today's paper and what should (and shouldn't) be in tomorrow's and Sunday's paper. It's now 1:30, and what I did this morning gets me no closer to my goal of figuring out what's going to be in tomorrow's Sports pages. So that's why there's no posts yet -- and why what I'm about to put up smells like the recycling bin.
Plus Dustin is actually at the track on the weekends. Me, I just watch the races at home from the relative safety of my couch. Wouldn't you rather hear from someone who actually covers racing?
I'm thinking Dustin and I will share a space somewhere - that way we can do more and cover the other when one is out on vacation or otherwise busy. The big issue is how to get Dustin's stuff out to all three Landmark papers (Greensboro, Norfolk, Roanoke). For the time being, I have to manually link. You'd think with all of the computers we have we could do it automatically.
Any thoughts? C'mon, you're all smart.

John, I believe that what Big E was always most proud about with Kerry was that he put his family first, racing second. My memory on this goes back to the old RPM Tonight show that used to be on ESPN2. Seems like it was part a a multi-show interview that they had about Big E and his kids.
