Bye bye Busch

NASCAR's No. 2 series will be called "Busch" for only one more year because Anheuser-Busch will spend its sponsorship dollars elsewhere in 2008.

The series has been Busch for the last, what, 20-some years? But, hey, we'll adjust. Remember, the top series used to be called the Winston Cup. It's been a pretty easy transition to calling it the Alltel Sprint Cingular Nextel Cup.

My vote for new series name: Grand National. It's timeless and classic.

Grand National sounds great. But greed will insist on a corporate name!

I've always thought it peculiar that NASCAR racing was founded and saw it's popularity grow in the Bible Belt yet, up until recent, named it's series after the Protestant sins, cigarettes & beer.

Greed being what it is to Nascar, I'm pretty sure it will be named for its top advertiser and become the Viagra Cup.

Matt said:

Umm... you do know Viagra left after 2005. If Wal-Mart takes over, that would just be weird. Although I prefer that to Monster Energy drink.

You realize what else the loss of Busch means, right?

No more Buschwackers.

It's one of the more clever terms in racin'. Maybe NASCAR will avoid the whole issue by banning the Cupsters from the circuit.

And another thing -- was A-B spending only $10 million to sponsor an entire series? That's about half a Cup sponsorship, right? If getting your name out there is the thing, 10 mill is chump change.

i agree heavily, but it will be the Nascar WalMart Series. Say it a couple times. Then say Nascar Busch Series. Walmart sounds corny, it is an insult to Nascar. but Nextel, Busch, Craftsman the all fit. Even Winston. In my opinion they should do 1 out of 3 things. 1) Leave it at Busch. 2) call it the Grand National series. But lets not forget Winston. Than is my main choice. The Nascar Winston Cup Series. Thal is what they should do.

John, it can't be the Grand National Series as it already is being used by NASCAR...Auto Zone West Series Grand National Division and the Busch East Series Grand National Division...so the obvious question is what will the Busch East Series be named???

Stop and think, who is one of the Bigger sponsers to NASCAR other than beer and cigs...motor oil? No...Hard Whiskey!! How about the Crown Royal Series. Yea, I know they already have the name in a series but IROC, come on!!! How about it, the Crown Royal Jr. Cup Series. OR, this could be the prime opportunity Miller has been waiting for!!! Cup Lite!!!

Matt said:

Actually, Crown Royal is leaving IROC. Don't forget that Bank of America has been rapidly expanding their ties to NASCAR without sponsoring a team...
