Dog days

Now that we're done with the Under-the-Lights segment of the 2007 Cup schedule, we now move on to the blegh: Dover, Pocono, Michigan, Sonoma, New Hampshire, Daytona, Chicago, off week, Indy, Pocono again, Watkins Glen, Michigan again and the night race at Bristol. That's 11 races between now and the most (over)hyped race of the year.

Out of those 11 races, I count one, two, maybe three that are usually interesting and another couple that rank as OK. (Neither Pocono race fits in either category.)

So what's the best (and worst) part of the upcoming schedule? Anything worth staying up late for? Or is this the time everyone needs to cuddle up with some back-to-school reading?

I love those road courses at Sonoma and Watkins. Wish there were more along with the super speedways like Talladega & Daytona.

Pocono is a bore. However, I do like Indy.

Of course my man, Mr. Gordon, always does quite well at the road courses, in fact, he's doing pretty well at all of them this season. That's what marriage will do for you, along with adding a new addition to your tribe in the very near future.

Do you have any info if the COT is gonna be the car used at any of the rd courses this year?

John, let me list the other sporting events that I have attended that do not measure up to the most over-hyped race you are talking about....

1. NFL Conference Championship games.
2. Stanley Cup Finals.
3. NBA Playoff games.
4. Subway Series baseball games.

I'll give you that some of the recent Bristol races have been disappointing, but that's due to the new, sanitized NASCAR. That being said nothing I've ever been to beats the atmosphere of Bristol. Granted I have not been there since the "I just wanted to rattle his cage" race, but if you ever go to Bristol you'll wonder why all those cookie-cutter tracks were built in the late 90's and no more Bristols or Richmonds.

Jon: NASCAR is using the COT at both Sonoma and the Glen this year. And your man Jeff Gordon could ride a Schwinn Varsity 10-speed to a top 20 finish this season.

Mark: NFL conference championship games rock,, or they usually do. And nothing's hyped like the NFL these days, not even NASCAR. (And is hockey still being played in the States? I hadn't noticed.) My only beef with Bristol is that for all of the beating and banging that's promised, there's usually a looooong green flag run in the middle that puts half the field a lap or three down and puts me to sleep.

I agree, though - NASCAR needs more Bristols and Richmonds. And fewer Poconos.
