If small teams ruled the world ...
I might have ditched the STRs (don't ask if you don't remember), but I'm sticking with the Small Team Standings.
Why? Why not? It's an exercise in nothing-ness. Then again, most of blogging is nothing but nothing.
Got that? Good. The pre-Martinsville standings are after the jump.
Brian Vickers continues to lead the Small Team Standings, though Bobby Labonte chipped three points off his lead last week at Bristol. David Gilliland's win* at The Bullring vaulted him up two spots to third overall. Five drivers are now within 71 points of the leader after Vickers found the Turn 3 wall late in the race and finished outside the top 10.
Rk--Driver--Pts/Beh
1-Brian Vickers ... 537
2-Bobby Labonte ... -26
3-David Gilliland ... -47
4-Robby Gordon ... -62
5-Scott Riggs ... -71
6-Travis Kvapil ... -109
7-J.J. Yeley ... -151
8-Jeremy Mayfield ... -163
9-Dave Blaney ... -203
10-Kyle Petty ... -241
* Yeah, yeah, I know that Jeff Burton really won last week at Bristol. Just play along and pretend that Childress and their ilk don't actually race. For you English majors in the house, it's called "suspending disbelief." For everyone else, yes, we're smoking crack**. Or something.
** If anyone in any supervisory position at the N&R is reading this, I'm not literally on crack. I'm just Mad. Or Cracked.

Hey John, do you think one of these small teams would take some money at Martinsville for a decal that says....
VOTE NO FOR GUILFORD COUNTY SCHOOL BONDS!!!!

Sure, Mark, they probably would.
But I'd pay double to hear any of those drivers explain their opposition to a public school bond on live TV. These guys are paid pitchmen who, Michael Waltrip notwithstanding, are barely able to rattle off a list of the products they're pimping. Watching some poor fool trying to explain a school bond would be funnier than a Sam Hornish Jr. blooper reel.

A Sam Hornish blooper reel? At least you have a former Indy 500 champion as your whippin' boy this year as opposed to Jason Leffler. I'm not even sure if he has a ride this year.
The first part of your post is easy. The driver just says "You know Alan (Bestwick), we both grew up in public schools and believe in public schools. But if there is one thing a driver knows about it is sponsorship Alan and the taxpayers can no longer sponsor these schools that are being mismanaged by the School Board. You wouldn't put new tires on a car that isn't handling right, you adjust the suspension first, same thing here, you have to adjust the School Board first or you are just burning off your tires and the next thing you know you are in the wall."
Quite the similarity actually with racing.... how to turn a lot of money into a little money. The difference is that in racing the sponsor demands results or you are pushing your toolbox accross the street.

Hornish is a much easier target. Guy's got an Indy 500 trophy on his mantle, but drives like he nailed to the hood.
I'm not sure your analogy works, Mark. How many low-budget operations do you see at the top of the Cup standings?

Drives like he has the Borg Warner Trophy nailed to his hood? That's a little harsh.
As far as the other I see both Robert Yates, correction Yates Racing cars still in the Top-35 well ahead of several big-dollar teams. That's getting more from less, not unlike the master at that concept who was Alan Kulwicki.
