FIVE LAPS: After the All-Star race

There's a certain irony to the Bud car winning a race before Junior. But it didn't really count, so there.

Lap 1: Shhhhh! Jay "From the Marbles" Busbee is still asleep after Saturday night's race. Dustin Long breaks down the weekend's most boring race. And if you're still not convinced that it ranked down there with watching water boil or defragmenting your PC, read Ed Hardin's column.

More after this jump ...

Lap 2: I'm still not 100 percent clear on how Bump Day works. What I do know is this: Go fast and get in, go slow and go home. There are no past champions provisionals, no top 35 rule and no threat that someone will dust off A.J. Foyt just to ensure a spot in the Other 500. (The crazy AJ4 Bump Day crash that everyone has been writing about is here at the 2:06 mark.). Anyhoo, here's your starting grid for Sunday's race. After the first four rows, it's a bunch of folks known only to their parents and maybe their spouses. (Bonus points if you can ID the two drivers with Cup starts.) Still, the first race on Memorial Day Sunday is always worth watching. Then we can all go back to ignoring U.S. open-wheel racing till May '09.

Lap 3: So much for Carl Edwards' chances. From here on out, let's call him Crabby.

Lap 4: Stock car testing at VIR on June 3. No telling which teams will show. Even if it's only Elliott Sadler and J.J. Yeley, watching them turn laps on the North Course is way better than being at work.

Lap 5: If you want some door-bangin' racin' excitement, check out this clip from the Porsche Supercar series. I want these guys to race in the 2009 All-Star race.

Not exactly "pass in the grass" material on Saturday night, was it? This is why I only watch less than an hour a week now. The best racing they have any more is the Trucks.

To answer your other question... John Andretti and I'm guessing AJ Foyt IV, unless it's one of those former road racers who started at either Sonoma or Watkins Glen. Plus you have Sarah Fischer who was in Childress' driver development program for a year and bombed on the west coast.

Really though, very few watches any of these All-Star events whether racing, football, or pro basketball? Hardly any of the participants actually look like it's serious business.

Gibbs took the time to test it's own engines. Two of them blew, but that's ok, no points sacrificed since it didn't count. I heard several other teams tried diff setups and strategies just as a test.

I'm certain probably 3/4 of the drivers would have preferred the time off to spend with mom.

John Andretti and AJ Foyt IV.
