No, no it doesn't.

If NASCAR adds Kentucky, who do you think will lose?

Conventional wisdom seems to suggest that Pocono is worth more for its dates than any racing that actually happens there. SMI doesn't yet own it, but Bruton Smith doesn't deny he's interested. Also, SMI hasn't in recent years cannibalized its own holdings to move race dates.

As much as I don't like Pocono, it has two things going for it: It's not a mile-and-a-half track (Kentucky is), and it draws from both the Philadelphia and NYC markets.

The flip of that: Pocono is more remote than even Martinsville (at least Martinsville is close to Charlotte), and NASCAR might not need NYC to be successful. The NFL has abandoned LA, and no one's worried about the NFL's financial health or popularity.

Assuming NASCAR doesn't add a 37th race, which track do you think should lose a date?

Tracks to lose dates...

As much as I like to see Boris Said and Robby Gordon up front, I'll have to say Watkins Glen & Sonoma. I used to enjoy these races, but now they are painful to watch.

As far as ovals, the 2nd date at California should be returned to Darlington for Labor Day weekend; even it it means Darlington loses Mother's Day weekend.

Concerning Pocono, I think the question to ask is which races are TOO LONG. Pocono should be no longer than 400 miles and 300 or 350 would be even better. Recall Dover which dropped back to 400 miles a few years ago.

I can't argue with you on race length, Mark. The Buschwide races are exactly the right length, and they're usually about 100 laps (or miles) shorter.

Believe it or not, the August 2007 Pocono race (3 hours, 47 mins) was shorter than the Sept. 2007 Dover race (3:55). That's a case for shortening both of 'em.

But as for venue, Sonoma and Watkins Glen (especially the '07 race at the Glen) are as close to the dirt road moonshine runs that NASCAR gets. There's more beating and banging in those races than there is at Bristol. I'd take Sonoma and the Glen over any of the 1.5 milers.

My fear is that Martinsville will eventually lose a date.
