FIVE LAPS: Between Dover and Pocono

Assorted randomness ...

Lap 1: Mike wrestles with the Jamie McMurray-as-odd-man-out-at Roush here, and AOL does much the same here. (McMurray, meanwhile, says he's sticking around.) The calculus is pretty simple for Roush, which needs to shut down one of its five teams to get to NASCAR's max of four. A Roush stable of Kenseth (past champ), Edwards (has made three Chases in four years), Biffle (Chaser in 2005 and probably this year, too) and Ragan (up and comer) is a pretty stout bunch. McMurray, with two wins in 199 career starts and who's now 22nd in points, is clearly the fifth wheel.

Would I hire McMurray? Sure, if Jeremy Mayfield or J.J. Yeley already were signed. And, yes, I know it's only the first full week of June, but it's never too early to talk Silly Season.

More after the jump ...

Lap 2: NASCAR's inbreeding has really gotten out of hand. During the Buschwide telecast Saturday, one of the booth guys watched Denny Hamlin's Toyota outclass the field and wondered aloud when NASCAR might do something to rein in the sport's newest manufacturer. That talking head? None other than Mr. Conflict of Interest himself, Rusty Wallace, who owns a Buschwide team that has his son behind the wheel and a big bad bowtie on the hood.

Lap 3: Yep, I turned off the Dover race after Junior wrecked. I had stuff to do, though not laundry, and I didn't want to see Smoke and Junior putter around the track in their dune buggies.

Lap 4: Do You NASCAR posts its list of five worst NASCAR trends. I'm pretty indifferent to No. 5 through 2, though in the case of No. 1 I don't think fans throw enough crap on the track after a race. Next time Shrub wins, I want to see the sky filled with Combos (do people still eat those? really?) and M&Ms.

Here are my five:
* NASCAR's insistence at racing at Pocono and Fontucky
* the fact that no one can beat Shrub in any series
* Smoke and Junior's keep losing
* There's the threat of another 1.5 mile-track on the schedule (*cough* Kentucky *cough*)
* six weeks of Bill Weber.

Lap 5: Can't wait for Pocono? Here's a clip of a recent road course race there, complete with all of the passing and excitement of a Cup race

Now John weren't you happy when your whippin' boy took out the Shrub during the Busch race.

Let's hope Shrub never wins with the Pedigree or Interstate paint schemes.
