WITW: The Friday reveal

This one was a little obscure, just the way I like it.

Monday's WITW is a piece of public art called "Planet Earth." It's at the corner of East Lee and South Elm in downtown Greensboro. And here it is:

True and actual fact: It's not actually a sea mine, but an air compressor from a U.S. Navy ship.

Two folks knew where in the world this thing was.

The only one who counts this week is Chris Marland, who lives in High Point and drives by it every day on his way to work for the city. (Of Greensboro, that is.)

The other correct guesser was N&R staffer Gerald Witt, who gave me the idea (as well as a bunch of others I'm going to use over the next few weeks) in the first place and therefore is ineligible for the (fictional) cash and fabulous prizes you get for guessing right.

If you want to know more about how a Navy ship compressor ended up in the middle of landlocked Greensboro, check out this story from the summer by former N&R staff writer Jim Schlosser.

Here's another shot of the mine compressor, looking across Elm Street:

And here's another artsy-ish one with Lee Street in the background:

I'll be back Monday with another WITW.

Dang. See, that's the last time I help you, John.

Fictional cash is all I have. I sure could use a little more.
