Hooking up on Facebook

Ever met anyone on Facebook, MySpace or other social networking sites?

I consider myself pretty open to new people and new things, but I just can't fathom building a meaningful relationship with someone based on their online face. Yet it's clear that people are using social networking sites more often for first encounters - whether it's meeting your college roommate, finding familiar connections when you move to a new place, or seeking out dates.

A lot of sites like Facebook might be about friends, but it's obvious there's a dating component. Why else would you advertise your relationship status in your profile? And why else would my friends keep up with each other's dating lives through changes in a profile-holder's relationship status?

Since the Unbuttoned crew has now officially joined Facebook, Wingfella, Ruby and I thought we'd ask you today about your notable social-networking experiences. We want to hear how these sites have worked for you - and what social-networking sites you think are the best for meeting new people and kick-starting relationships.

I'm not sure any of them work well. I run into exes and meet new people quicker on myspace than facebook, but i seem to have longer messaging times with people on facebook than myspace. Also, I'm quicker to reject an add friends on facebook than myspace also. as for relationships. I love facebook's "It's complicated" I'm usually either putting "single" or "it's complicated".

Yeah - I've heard more about myspying from exes looking up each-other than I have heard of successful hookups.

It would be nice to hear a tale of actual online romance on this rainy Friday afternoon.

Yeah, well, that's one reason I put this feeler out, Wingfella. I'm not so sure there really is any such thing as a true online romance.

Most of the ones I've heard about seem to end with lies and disillusionment - or weird stalking.

I sort of ignore people's relationship status information on these sites, since so much of it says things like "it's complicated" or seems to be a complete fabrication.

Kind of funny, but I had a blog detailing my divorce/custody battle for several years when blogging first "hit" Greensboro. I have since closed it, all because last January I married again, and I met him on MySpace. I don't have a lot of faith in the online dating/social networking scene, but I met my absolute soulmate in cyber space-so now I just might encourage other people to keep an open mind about it! Love knows no bounds...err...dating medium.

Hi Annie -

If you're willing to share more, I'd love to hear about how you met a guy on MySpace and moved the relationship from online to offline.

Did you join MySpace with the intent of dating, or did you find something when you weren't really looking for it?
