Girl hot? Or Guy hot?

Cosmo has a feature where they poll 50 men and 50 women on the street about a celebrity to determine if she is girl hot or guy hot? For example they recently rated Cameron Diaz and according to their "poll," 66 percent of guys think Diaz is hot but only 38 percent of women agree.

I've had conversations like this with my friends and almost always the girls and the guys disagree. (In my experience this only really works when we're talking about women. I think we're more comfortable judging the attractiveness of women than men are comfortable judging other men.)

But why do we seem to disagree? What in a woman do other women find attractive that doesn't do it for men and vice versa? In my opinion, when women judge other women, they are really judging themselves. They want the scale of attractiveness to put themselves at the top of the list, so they'll give a good rating to a woman who is beautiful in a normal kind of way, a beautiful that is somewhat attainable.

The average woman, I would guess, is less forgiving of a woman who is held together by botox than a man would be. And women probably make snap judgments about other women's characters based on the way they dress or do their makeup, something I doubt men really take into account in a "girl hot versus guy hot" situation.

Is it just jealousy? And if men and women can't agree on what makes a woman attractive, how can we single women hope to make ourselves so?

Just to get the conversation going, let's experiment a bit. Angelina Jolie — girl hot or guy hot? How about Jennifer Lopez? And to shake things up a bit, let's judge George Clooney and, a personal fave, Jake Gyllenhaal.

Angelina is hot when doesn't try to starve herself into oblivion. J-Lo is boring so it doesn't matter whether she's hot or not. I cracked up looking at this picture of Jennifer Love Hewitt. But i still think she's hot. http://www.tmz.com/2007/11/28/name-that-butt/

as for George Clooney, I've never looked at him as attractive or unattractive. I just see George Clooney. Same for Jake Gyllenhaal... I don't think Maggie is hot either.

Cameron Diaz looks like a mouse. Not hot.

Jennifer Lopez has a nice body, I guess, but she's always looked so bronze and fake, like she's hiding the fact that she's never really been all that attractive.

Angelina Jolie is an uber-hottie, though, and my girlfriend agrees with me.

Also, nothing against Clooney or Jake. They've got it. I'm not gonna playa-hate.

Jolie has superior genetic material.

Sorry, Chronicles of the Wingman, but Maggie Gyllenhaal has it going on. She's accessibly hot, like what Betty is talking about in those comparisons.

As for Clooney, I want to be like him when I grow up. The dude has it right - you can't hate.

nah, I'm still not attracted to her. Anne Hathaway (Enchanted, Brokeback Mountain) would be my alternative. Allison Mack (Smallville), Amy Smart (Crank, Varsity Blues), Angel Lewis (National Lampoon's Naked Mile), Kandyse McClure(Battlestar Galatica). Now these ladies, I would like to think that they're look is average-attainable/hot...right?

Betty said:

Anne Hathaway, Amy Smart, I think they have a girl-next-door quality to them that a lot of guys seem to find attractive in a take-home-to-mom kind of way.

Cameron Diaz - so not hot.

Angelina Jolie - used to be more hot, when she actually had some weight on her.

Jennifer Lopez - never thought she was hot.

George Clooney - I just don't get that one.

Jake Gyllenhaal - sort of cute, I guess.

Of course all these people are attractive, because that's their jobs. But I wouldn't say that I've ever really been wowed by them, except for Angelina Jolie, who is an absolutely beautiful woman who just needs to eat a sandwich - or ten.

Speaking of Ms. Jolie, I think the Angelina vs. Jennifer Aniston argument might be the most basic girl-girl versus guy-girl argument there is. A lot of girls seem to prefer Aniston because she's the girl-next-door type - and attainable, perhaps, compared to someone like Angelina Jolie.

Oh, and here's an obvious one: Britney Spears (in her past life, before she became a public disaster) was always seriously guy-hot. I know very few chicks who ever found her attractive.

I don't really get into celebrities that much when it comes to being attracted to people. Yeah, they're pretty. But a lot of them just aren't all that interesting-looking, and some of them are so plastic-y or fake-and-baked that there's really not a lot there to get excited about.

Then again, I'm sort of old-school. Someone like Paul Newman or Harrison Ford is much more geniuinely attractive to me than someone like Heath Ledger or Patrick Dempsey.

Angelina Joile is not hot - she has very harsh facial features, always looks as if she just finished crying, or is about to burst out crying. She has that 'seductress' look about her, like a toned-down Elvira. I can definately see why so many guys fantasize about her. But she doesnt have a pleasant face at all - she has that biatch look, and I dont like it - shes way overrated.

You know how those cartoonists on the boardwalk exaggerate peoples features to draw those pictures they sell to tourists ? You know, like - if you have buck-teeth, the cartoonist will draw you with ridiculously exaggerated buck teeth ? Well, Angelina looks like one of those drawings - where everything is already exaggerated. It would be interesting to see what one of those cartoonists did with her - she's already exaggerated looking, they would have to draw off the page !
