The fights at Grimsley

Among editorial topics we discussed this morning were the fights last week at Grimsley High School.

These were not gang-related clashes, per se, though they did involve at least some loosely allied groups of students, male and female, from rival neighborhoods Hampton Homes and Cumberland Courts.

As we see it, the problem was community friction that unfortunately spilled into the halls of a public high school:

There are three obvious realities here:

1. That such dangerous, disruptive behavior can not be tolerated on a school campus. The students involved deserve stern disciplinary action, as school policy prescribes in the case of physical violence. This is no time to fret over suspension statistics. The schools have an obligation to be firm but compassionate in how they handle the students involved in the fighting. But they also have an obligation to the majority of students at Grimsley who don't fight and are there to do what they are supposed to do at school: learn. They have a similar obligation to the teachers and staff at Grimsley who presumably signed up to teach lessons and provide guidance, not to referee impromptu hallway boxing matches.

2. That this is a problem that students brought with them onto campus. As one who grew up here, I'm aware of an ugly tradition of turf wars between members of various neighborhoods. It recalled Jim Schlosser's story last week on gangs that drew their identity and common bonds from neighborhoods such as Smith Homes, Hampton Homes and Morningside Homes. Decades ago Hampton Homes was referred to ominously by some as "Southside."

3. That the community definitely needs to be involved in the root solutions underlying these conflicts. Parents, youth and other concerned community members should feel compelled to be part of the answer -- in fact, the major part. There are many decent, law-abiding in those neighborhoods. There are presumably also many young people from both neghborhoods who get along fine and see each other for who they are, not where they live. They need to be involved in lasting answers to these ugly, destructive rivalries.

One of the students involved in the various fights described the brawling as a means of defending the honor of his neighborhood.

"I don't feel like anybody should disrespect my home," Shan Carter, a Grimsley junior, told a News & Record reporter.

Ironically, his actions, and those of too many of his classmates, did precisely that.

Another good reason to get your kids out of the public zoo system and either home school or send your child to a private school.

The Bloods and the Crips were neighborhood gangs about 40 years ago. As a matter of fact the two men who founded the Bloods and the Crips were at one time best friends and members of the same neighborhood gang.

Play it down all you want but it's still a gang issue just like Greensboro has had since you and I were in neighborhood street gangs barely 5 blocks apart all those many years ago and it's still the sort of issue Greensboro's politricksters want to see swept under the rug.

I see your point, Billy.
We see gangs as being defined not only by communities but as having criminal activity as their mission.
But it's more a matter of semantics.

Gangs have been around, since the migration of immigrants claiming turf all over the U.S. So don't act like this is some new wave of violence, in the 1920's 30's 40's 50's 60's 70's by this time they had become more savvy. They were more organized and laundering money to each other, see the difference between the gangs of yesterday, and today they learned to respect one another. To them it was more profitable to make peace not war! They felt with the education and sophistication they could accomplish what they set out to do. And yes these gangs were notorious, we don't need go into their activities we all know what that involved and some of the people who are complaining now may be living off the stolen, ill gotten goods and manipulated with a strong hold on the wealth of today. Let's look at gang emulation, I remember the little rascals, there was only one little black boy in the gang, Hmmm! then there was the Bowery Boys, West Side Story which was glorified as a love story, give us a break. And no I'm not going to blame any of our counterparts, we were just to ignorant to know the difference, of what was real and what was a lifestyle that most poor children wanted. They marvelled at the glamour and clothes, jewelry, cars, and last but not least the money. In society money brought power, and prestige, along with power, as we are lead to believe! See back then you had the Italian gangs, Irish, Russians, Latinos, and rebels, Yes I could go on, but I won't the picture is clear. But when you get different elements of gang activity and different cultures the game becomes even more dangerous. Look at how we view other war torn countries, poor underdeveloped nations. street gangs are a way of life for them everyday! to them it becomes a mind set for survival, No matter what statistics show we have allowed some of the most ruthless and dangerous people into the U.S. They come to take over the neigborhoods and then set up shop, then comes the recruitment of our children not theirs but ours. Theirs become leaders not followers, it takes finances to organize a strategic, gangland system where you have gun runners, mules, human sacrificial rituals for inititiation. Law enforcement taking bribes, bank rolling Politicians, the list goes on. But now that it is people of color ,and street level crime it's a huge problem and has gotten out of control. It's been out of control from day one, it's just on a different level, dosed with a different set of priorities. At this present time, while everyone has their little section and comfort zones. We as concerned tax paying citizens, our children and elderly recipients of entitlements, are going to come together in the name of our children And start to come together in a alliance to take the streets back, take our children back out of a system that has failed most AA families, we as people allowed this to take place, we allowed them to tell us how to raise our children, what our children can and cannot do, where they are allowed to go to school, what they can and cannot be involved in at school, officials telling us how to raise our children. These responsibilities need to be put back in the hands of the parents. It just seem so ironic that our forefathers and mothers were able to raise everyone else's children clean and cook in their homes, washing and ironing their master's clothes. But in this day and time we are not capable of doing these things to save our own children and families? 2008 will bring an element of surprise to a lot of people, We will begin to take back our roles as concerned parents, Grandparents, Fosterparents, Singleparents, youngparents, Non-english speaking parents whose children have lost their way. Re-connecting communities, building up loyalty, trust, self-esteem, dignity, empowerment through mentoring.
