Letter to Obama

With Gov. Mike Easley having written a letter to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama encouraging him to debate Hillary Clinton in North Carolina, we decided that we should write a letter to him too.

We'd like to include your reasons why the two candidates should debate here. Let us know by 3 p.m. and they may be a part of tomorrow's editorial.

We hope to hear from you!

Are you afraid of another debate? Last night's debate you were very evasive with your answers. Why? Are you now showing that you have no substance, just a lot of rhetoric. Or do you think this primary season is over since the media and the Democratic Party has given you a free ride.

Truth is your momentum is based on a farce. As a Florida Democrat you have fought to not have our votes counted and voices heard. Is that the way you feel about North Carolinians? Just because our Republican legislature gave you a prospective lead does not mean that the numbers are true and correct.

The primary season is far from over. All states have not been heard. Are you afraid that if they are heard you will not be the nominee? You probably will not if people can see through the rhetoric and lack of substance.

You could not even answer a question honestly or with real substance. You only showed us more of the lack of respect you have for us. Do you think that the people of the United States of America are stupid. They can see that you do not have a straight answer for anything.

Debate in North Carolina. The people of this country need to see more about you and maybe they can see the man behind the mirrors and smoke. We do not know who you really are and what you really stand for. And that scares the H out of this Democrat.

Debates are good and many Americans learned that Mr. Obama has had a 25 year relationship with the self-proclaimed Pentagon and US Capitol terrorist, William C. Ayers.

My concern is that many Obama supporters just do not get it. There is nothing he can do or say that will get them to think that maybe Mr. Obama really has some serious issues.

We all know that Sen. Clinton is no Mother Theresa, but her background is nowhere close to that of Mr. Obama.

I was undecided here in Honesdale, PA, but now my vote goes to Clinton.

The more I hear Mr. Obama, the more my stomach turns. Do not get me wrong, he speaks well, but his contradictions are numerous.

For example, Mr. Obama often boasts he is "the only candidate who isn't taking a dime from Washington lobbyists," yet his fundraising team includes 38 members of law firms that were paid $138 million last year to lobby the federal government, records show.

Those lawyers, including 10 former federal lobbyists, have pledged to raise at least $3.5 million for Obama's presidential race. Listen to Obama lie, then read the names of lobbyists who contributed more than $138 Million to his campaign. [Source: ANCNews]

Yes, the debate last night was the first one I've seen moderators actually question Senator Obama and I believe his answers were evasive and parsed as normal. I think in the general election contest, all of Senator Obama's close friends and mentors will be exposed. Then the people of our nation will have to question whether these are the types of relationships our nation wants Senator Obama to bring with him to the White House?

A 17+ year relationship with Mr. Rezko, a Syrian who I believe unquestionably helped Obama buy his mansion?

A 20+ year relationship with Rev. Wright who spews anti-American and racist rhetoric?

A many year relationship with Mr. Ayers--visiting his home for an event and working with him for several years on a board; and, a guy who was responsible for bombing our government buildings and still today does not have remorse and says we didn't do enough back then?

And that's just the beginning of the list.

So I ask you to ask yourselves... Are these the type of people you want playing in the White House's sandbox? If yes, vote for Senator Obama. If not, vote for Senator Clinton or Senator McCain NOW.

Don’t expect Senator Obama to take the stand or podium to discuss health care. His plan is flawed and he and his most ardent supporters know it. I had the opportunity to square off with Senator John Kerry, literally nose to nose, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania earlier this month, there was no argument that I presented that Senator Kerry or any of Senator Obama’s staff could answer that didn’t leave me without insurance or paying for it which I can not afford to do now. They told me that I should go to the emergency room as they would not turn me away and incur the debt. In the end, as Senator Kerry had finely dressed folks waiting for a picture (folks, I might add that did not come on in to the working class Steak Sandwich fund raiser at which the Senator was speaking, at least to my knowledge, and I was a server at the event), I was promised an email out lining Senator Obama’s health care plan. Two weeks later, I have no email. By the way, those folks got their snapshot. Can you say elite?

I am the National Director of the Women's Coalition under Operation Firing for Effect. We are a grassroots group with many voices around the country. Our mission is to get full funding for the VA. We have a resolution on our website www.offe2008.org which Senator Obama has not signed on but Senator Hillary Clinton has signed on with our group.

One thing that impressed me was a story I read about a Navy veteran. He was doing okay, working, had health insurance...he got sick with some sort of blood poisoning. It was caused by the anthrax shots he received. Well Senator Clinton and her office helped this young man. With the backing of so many former enlisted military members and officers, I believe she will do the most for veterans.

I have not heard Senator Obama talk about veterans at all. I am also disturbed by the fact noone has ever asked him about veterans. It really makes me wonder because more and more folks are coming out in blogs and statements saying the flag pin bothers them. I noticed last night that he didn't have the flag pin on that a veteran gave him.

Senator Obama is a great orator but has difficulty answering questions concisely and succinctly. He often rambles and loses my attention at least. He does not seem to answer questions without stuttering. And more than that he just doesn't answer questions right on point. Sometimes I think he does not know his policy points and his statements about issues well enough to answer questions. Frankly he looks like a rank amateur in debates.

I will borrow one of Simon Cowell's description of Obama......

he is like a hamburger...without the beef!

If Obama doesn't agree to debate in North Carolina he will be flipping off the NC voters just like he did us Michigan and Florida voters by blocking our re-votes, and just like he did Hillary Clinton yesterday during a campaign event when he was "scratching" his cheek. If he is our nominee I will flip him off by voting for (groan) McCain.

Of course we need another "debate." After the first 2150 debates some are still unaware that mrs. Clinton is a pathological "misspeaker" (liar).Others are still unaware that Obama is an elitist, Marxist who simply can't stand white, spiritual, working class folks who he comes into contact with only on the campaign trail.

Instead of a debate, just have someone follow him around to his private get togethers with millionaire and billionaire, left wing elitists in mansions in San Francisco, record his comments, and we'll know how he really feels, as opposed to his scripted perfromances in front of those folks he despises.

Immediately afterwards, one of his panicked handlers will explain to us what he meant to say. Why does he find it so hard to say what his handlers say he meant to say. Because he has no idea that his statements will ever reach the public, which means he's stupid!

The only way both campaigns should agree to a debate is if the League of Women Voters of NC moderates it and puts it on Cable access TV, C-SPAN, youtube, and/or any network that will accommodate it.

The debate last week was an insult to democracy, an insult to voters and an insult to both candidates. These were not "tough" questions by real journalists. The debate was a freakshow moderated by a couple of sleazy sideshow barkers. It was infotainment, delivered by overpaid infotainers -- not journalists. Just a few tough questions would have been:

"More than 40 percent of our federal taxes now go for military related expenses, while just 3 percent is spent on education. One watchdog group recently found that members of Congress, collectively, have made close to $200 million on this war -- not to mention the millions that Dick Cheney and the Bush family have made. What do you intend to do to curb the influence of military contractors and the military industrial complex in Washington D.C.? Don't you think there should be laws against officials investing in any company that does business with the federal government?"

"EVERY country is six years away from making a nuclear bomb -- not just Iran. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the lack of oversight on technology has put nuclear materials and technology in the hands of dozens if not hundreds of rogue organizations. How do you intend to stop the spread of nuclear technology and materials around the world?"

"Many people think the law now doesn't apply to the Bush administration because of Congressional negligences. You are both lawyers. Mr. Obama, you are a Constitutional lawyer. Why did you both, as well as McCain, take an oath of office to 'defend the Constitution of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic,' and then turn a blind eye to the Bush administration's repeated assaults on the rule of law and national security? For instance, the millions of counts of warrantless wiretapping are felonies. Then there's lying to Congress, outing a CIA agent, torture, taking the nation to war under false pretexts, signing statements, in which Bush says he doesn't intend to follow the law. Why should we believe any of the three candidates will respect the Constitution once they are in office, after all three have shown they have so little respect for it?"
